“History of Buddhism” Class
Monthly--begins Sept. 22
We are excited to announce a new Sacramento Buddhist Study Class conducted by Rev. Yuki Sugahara on the “History of Buddhism.” The class will be held monthly on the 4th Friday of the month starting on September 22, 2023, through January 26, 2024 (except the Friday after Thanksgiving).
The class will be conducted in person at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Each class will start with a 45-minute session on chanting where you will learn basic etiquette, general practice and leading, and hitting the Kansho.
Rev. Yuki encourages all to attend the class in person.
- Hondo (main hall) 7pm-7:45pm
- Classroom 1 (&4) 8pm-9pm
For those who are going to participate in the class portion via Zoom, please wait in the waiting room until admitted shortly before 8 pm.
After the chanting session, Rev. Yuki will provide a lecture on Buddhist history, including the history of Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and American/European Buddhism, and Jodo Shinshu. The syllabus includes an Overview, Non-Pure and Pure Land schools of each origin. The class may also include a guest speaker and an opportunity for Dharma exchange/discussion among the students.
This course offers a wonderful opportunity to engage in an in-depth discovery of Buddhist history.
The suggested donation for the classes is $30. This includes the cost of the original Monto Shikisho which I am still waiting for the arrival. If you are participating only via Zoom and no need of the Monto Shikisho, then the suggested donation is $15. We only accept check or cash.
Please make check payable to: Sacramento Buddhist Church (Please write “Sacramento Buddhist School” in the note section). Send checks to: 2401 Riverside Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95818.
While the class itself is tuition-free, donations are gratefully accepted.
Please send an email to Rev. Yuki to sign up for the class or to request additional information.
