The Dharma talk for this service will be given by Rev. Harry Bridge, resident minister of the Buddhist Church of Oakland.
What is the Ho-onko Service?
Hoonko (pronounced Hō-onkō) is the most important service for us because it honors Shinran Shonin, founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. “Hoonko” means “repaying our debt of gratitude,” which truly reflects our appreciation for Shinran’s teachings and life. In the Jodo Shinshu School of Buddhism, it is customary to hold an annual Ho’onko 報恩講 Memorial Service in remembrance of Shinran Shonin (1173-1263), the Japanese Buddhist priest who we look to as the founder of our tradition.
