3rd Saturday Temple Maintenance Day
Grab your work gloves and join the Building and Maintenance crew for the monthly 3rd Saturday Betsuin Maintenance day. There is always much to do to keep our buildings and grounds in good working order and we rely on the volunteers who come out to lend a hand. No experience necessary.
Examples of routine work performed include: changing light bulbs and fixtures, installing paper towel dispensers, patching holes, cleaning the ice machine, replacing batteries in smoke detectors to more labor intensive jobs such as cleaning gutters, inspecting drains, cleaning swamp coolers, etc. Think of it as the temple equivalent of the “honey do list!”
For details, please email Ken at kfuruk@aol.com.
The Volunteer - Movie Screening Event
The Volunteer, a documentary directed by David Brodie, will be shown at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento on April 18, 2026 at 1:00pm. This is a 35 minute documentary of Japanese American Vietnam Veteran, Bruce Nakashima, who reflects on his combat experiences, and his struggles to overcome his feelings of guilt and anger. Following the film, there will be a Question & Answer session including the Director.
The Nisei VFW Post 8985 and the Sacramento Adult Buddhist Association are co-sponsoring this free event and welcome you to attend as well as bring a friend or fellow Veteran. If there are any questions, contact John Yoshikawa, (916) 320-2111; spyron@aol.com.
About the Volunteer
The Volunteer is a short documentary about Vietnam veteran Bruce Nakashima.
“The pain in The Volunteer captures the unforgivable realities of war, things that hurt any combat Veteran to the marrow. The joy is realizing, from Bruce Nakashima’s experiences, that I am neither a criminal nor a victim.” –Francisco Juarez, Vietnam Veteran and Commander of the El Camino Real Chapter of the American GI Forum of the US
“…a moving and deeply resonant exploration into the enduring impact of racial trauma, the profound power and bonds of friendship, and the universal quest for identity and a sense of belonging.” BEND Film Festival
