Timeless Resonance
Date: Friday, November 20
Time: 6 p.m. (approximately 1 hour)
Location: Buddhist Church of Sacramento, Main Hondo
If you attend Sunday services at a Jodo Shinshu temple in the US, you may be familiar with Juseige, Junirai, and Sanbutsuge, and perhaps occasionally Shōshinge or the Amida Sūtra. While these are all treasured sūtras and verses, our tradition also includes many chants with beautiful melodies that we rarely have the opportunity to hear. These chants are arranged into ceremonial sequences called sahō, traditionally performed at Jodo Shinshu observances.
This past March, we experienced a futuristic approach to Buddhist services through the Techno Hōyō led by Rev. Asakura from Japan. For this event, we will explore our traditional roots through "Daishi Eigu Saho," a service traditionally performed around Hōonkō, the annual observance honoring Shinran Shōnin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu.
We are pleased to welcome Rev. Tadao Koyama, a Sacramento native who currently serves at the Tacoma Buddhist Temple. Rev. Koyama returned from Japan after earning the qualification of "Tokubetsu Hōmuin," a specialist in the chanting and ceremonial practices of Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha. He will join us in conducting this special service.
