Tisarana - Sacramento
Yoga for your Mind + Body + Heart
Tisarana Yoga – Sacramento offers a welcoming and supportive space to experience yoga as a practice of movement, mindfulness, and connection. Tisarana Yoga complements Buddhist practice by offering another way to cultivate mindfulness, awareness, and a sense of balance in everyday life. Through movement, breath, and quiet reflection, the practice provides an opportunity to care for the body and mind while connecting with others in the Sangha.
Classes are designed to be accessible to a range of ages, abilities, religions and levels of yoga experience. Whether you are new to yoga or have practiced for years, you are invited to move at your own pace, reconnect with your breath and body, and enjoy practicing together in the community.
No previous yoga experience is necessary. There is no fee, although donations to any charitable organization are appreciated.

Sandy Kataoka Fong
Sandy Kataoka Fong is a Tisarana Yoga instructor and an active member of the Buddhist Church of Sacramento. She serves as the chair of the Marketing and Communications committee and is Co-president elect of the Board of Trustees. You can also see her on the “yagura” during Obon, serving as one of the Bon Odori instructors. She most recently served as President of the Kaizen Toastmasters club.
She completed the intensive six-month Tisarana Yoga Teacher Training program through the Bob Matsueda Yoga School and received certification through the Government of India’s AYUSH Yoga Certification Board. She is also registered with Yoga Alliance
Her training included the foundations of yoga philosophy and practice, including Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga and teachings from traditional yoga texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita, along with the study and practice of anatomy, asana, pranayama, meditation, relaxation, and safe teaching techniques.
Sandy’s approach to teaching emphasizes making yoga welcoming, safe, and adaptable for people with different levels of experience and physical ability. Students are encouraged to listen to their bodies, explore modifications when needed, and recognize that yoga is not about achieving the perfect pose.
For Sandy, yoga is an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with the breath and body, and create space for greater awareness and balance. Through Tisarana Yoga, she hopes to share a practice that supports physical well-being while also creating opportunities for relaxation, mindfulness, healthy habits, and Sangha—community and connection with others.
About Tisarana Yoga
Tisarana Yoga seeks to cultivate relaxation and well-being in body, mind, and heart through practices designed to be safe and accessible for all ages and abilities.
Tisarana Yoga was established by the Buddhist Churches of America through the Bishop’s Expansion Fund. Instructors complete an intensive six-month teacher training program and final examinations, with certification through Bob Matsueda’s Yoga School, a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School, and India’s Ministry of AYUSH Yoga Certification Board.
While rooted in the traditional practice of Hatha Yoga, the program is presented as a health and wellness activity that complements Buddhist practice. Its emphasis is on improving physical well-being, reducing stress, cultivating gratitude, and supporting the overall health of participants while reflecting the values of compassion, kindness, and respect that are central to our temple community.
Tisarana Yoga is designed to be accessible and adaptable for people of all ages, abilities, and experience levels. With an emphasis on relaxation, each session incorporates breathing techniques, gentle and subtle body movements, asanas (yoga poses), and focused meditation.
All levels, abilities, religions, and ages are welcome. There is no fee for participating in a Tisarana Yoga class. Donations are gladly accepted.
